I mean from the Saudis' point of view I can see why they would be so attached to selling oil, as petroleum exports have transformed the country in barely a hundred years from an impoverished backwater to an affluent wonderland. Wiser leaders might perhaps have invested that wealth in a way that allowed them to diversify their economy away from oil but it must be easy to just take the money and run.
