The problem with bad sequels is the way they foreclose on the story possibilities we all had in our heads after seeing the original. Think of the open-ended future at the end of Terminator 2, and the contrast this created with the fatalistic conclusion of the original. That was utterly destroyed by that woeful third film, and all the other dross that's been sold under the brand name since.
