Contrary to popular belief, the numbers on the dial of a toaster are NOT minutes. They control how much a strip inside the device curves, and when the curvature reaches a certain level, the toast pops up.
That's it. It's arbitrary, and a setting of 2 could produce barely toasted toast one day, and burnt black toast the next due to all sorts of environmental factors, including the age of the toaster. What's worse, the meaning of the numbers is not standardised between different models.
