Well, the Sylvania 6420FF appears to have a bad flyback transformer. There's some soot and discoloration there, and I get popping noises on startup (likely an arc between the transformer and something else). I was able to find a replacement on eBay for $25, so fingers crossed this is an easy repair (if not, maybe I'll use the replacement flyback to build a plasma speaker).
The Sony KV-36HS510, on the other hand, works great! I just did a quick test, but the colors look good and the geometry is mostly spot on (a bit of bowing along the top). I'm going to remove the housing and repair the cracks with some epoxy, and I'll also have to replace the power cord since the previous owner cut it off. Still, very little work to get a 36" TV that's perfect for retro gaming! I'm probably going to sell this one though, at 200+lbs I don't think I'll be able to get it in the loft. 32"/120lbs is about all I can fit up there.
