Also, the land itself is not really land, it's a huge alluvial deposit from unthinkable floods. Every ~250 years or so it rains for forty days and forty nights and the Central Valley of California becomes a sea. The last time it happened in 1862 "all the works of man were washed away".

This "land" is a huge pile of rocks, all rounded, all between one and ten centimeters or so in diameter, and all embedded in a tan loam that acts as a kind of crude cement.
