Just finished J. Plowery’s “Softwar”.
A thoughtful read for an alternative use case for bitcoin.
In summary-
The basic premise is that historically war fighting occurred firstly on Land and then moved to Sea , Air , then Space and now Cyberspace.
Furthermore, kinetic war has been stalemated thru the invention of nuclear warheads. ( and that superpowers will never risk world wide catastrophe through this type of engagement!!??)
Satoshi , through bitcoin has inadvertently replicated the complex emergent benefits of war fighting by creating an electro- cyber version of it.
A global scale physical power competition is being waged and nations don’t appear to be aware that it’s happening because the battlefield is “inside” the disembodied virtual reality of cyberspace, where nobody can be physically harmed, and things are easily hidden by abstractions and metaphors.
Rather than the name bitcoin , a more technically accurate name for the proofs of power produced by the bitcoin proof of work protocol would be bitpower I.e quantities of power ( aka) watts converted into ( physically scarce , decentralised, and costly) bits of information that can be transferred across cyberspace.
Herein lies the cleverness of bitcoins design - the bitcoin protocol empowers society to leverage physical power for control authority over a vital new agrarian resource - bit power.
He created a system where globally divided populations with completely different priorities and belief systems can engage in a physical power competition to establish physically constrained, balanced and decentralised control authority over this potentially vital resource to achieve global consensus on its legitimate state of ownership and chain of custody in a purely zero trust, permission less and egalitarian way ( page 325)
( or page 286)
This theoretically allows people to import the physically constraining and thermodynamically restrictive properties of our surrounding physical environment into cyberspace so that we can create real world , materially consequential effects in , from and through cyberspace.
As engineers like Saylor says - proof of work protocols like bitcoin appear to have opened a portal between the physical realm and the digital realm.
