Super Mario Bros the movie is fantastic, it made me realize just how bad kids movies have been for the last 25 years. It just did everything competently and didn't add poz and it made it seem like the greatest movie since citizen Kane because I'm so starved. It was almost in Ghibli territory because of this. I also liked how well they threw in fan service, it was seamlessly executed. Like when they fight Bowser I knew they would swing him around by his tail like in Mario 64 but it happened naturally in the fight and wasn't a huge deal. My one gripe was Luigi's character arch being too abrupt, I would have rather seen him get a backbone developed while he was separated from Mario instead of just being a coward until the very last moment, though at least they made him change, modern Disney movies would have him throw the star to Mario instead of saving him with an act of bravery and then fighting Bowser equally as they did here.
I'll add that peach has a sort of anime esque character, she's like a Mary Sue but just a framework, this character shows up in anime, like Lisa Hays in robotech, it's a strong competent female lead but they can't progress and ultimately act as a spring board and motivator for the protagonist who surpasses them to save the day. I think this is maybe reading to much into it but it's like the Japanese princess ideal or something. That's enough soy jacking for now.
