Gilgamesh was a hero of ancient Mesopotamian mythology and the central figure in the Epic of Gilgamesh, an Akkadian epic poem composed during the late 2nd millennium BC. However, his legacy as a prominent figure in Sumerian legend dates back to the Third Dynasty of Ur (c. 2112–2004 BC).

The exploits of Gilgamesh are recounted in five surviving Sumerian poems, with the earliest likely being Gilgamesh, Enkidu, and the Netherworld. Most historians believe Gilgamesh was a historical king who ruled the city-state of Uruk during the Early Dynastic Period (c. 2900–2350 BC). Inscriptions discovered in Ur confirm his existence as a real monarch, and the Sumerian King List includes him among the rulers of Uruk.

According to fragments of an epic text found at Mê-Turan (modern Tell Haddad), after his death, Gilgamesh was buried beneath the riverbed. To accomplish this, the workmen of Uruk temporarily diverted the flow of the Euphrates River.
