Last I checked, there were plenty of arts to go around. If there weren't, I wouldn't have a job. XD I guess the analysis would be: Which art is being produced vs. which isn't? The arts, just like any industry, is about making money. And you make money by being popular. Fringe stuff will never be popular or else it wouldn't be fringe.
However, the sad thing is that - at least in the US - a lot of funding has been cut from schools and the first programs to go are always art, music, and theater. So a lot of kids never even get exposed to this stuff to discover they're interested in it. Or if they are interested in it, they don't have the means to pursue it in any realistic way that could lead to a future career.
