Chesley Bonestell's astonishing painting "The Earth is Born" appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine 72 years ago.

I must've stared at this image (reprinted in "The World We Live In") a thousand times as a kid. It's still makes me marvel at the path that brought us to this moment.
