Not sure the right takeaway from today's fiasco is "automatic software updates are bad" so much as "the ubiquity of automatic software updates has come to obscure for many people that update support is, above all, a trust relationship, and each one of those relationships should be regularly evaluated, especially if it's the category of software where c-suite persuasion (ie the bypassing of expertise) can be the deciding factor in whether huge enterprises get saddled with it".
