At this point, it has become clear that Sentinel 65X works. It’s not just an idea, not yet another failed project, it’s a thing that exists in the world. That much is settled.
What I am trying to work out, in my head, is what a reasonable, realistic goal for the first real production run of Sentinel 65X 1.0 boards, factory populated, should be.
Not so few that the unit price is absurd. Not so many that I’ll never raise the money to pay for them. Retrocomputing is a small world, and the number of people interested in such a niche within a niche is admittedly even smaller. Once it has games and such, that would obviously expand, but when it’s just starting out? Not so much.
What do you think? How many units is a reasonable first run, meant to go to retro coders and the obsessive early adopters? 10? 25? 50? 100?
I am not The 8-Bit Guy. I don’t have thousands of fans and millions of subscribers. I don’t have a big team of people designing stuff for me. I have no illusions of my status in the world of retro. But what I do have is a good design for a fun little retro system that I believe is worth owning. Something that could grow, something that can fill several niches in retro, but remain accessible to those with limited means.
