We made it over the pass on Rt90 a day before it was closed for snow. We hit two snow storms (including a fair amount of driving on roads the plows hadn’t done yet…very glad I bought snow tires just before we left). And we hit one dust storm (!).
The border crossing went smoothly. We got an hour long police escort to the toll road (to avoid gang extortion) that was exciting. The rest of the drive was smooth, just exhausting since I was being very careful to maintain the speed limit, which is fine at 110/90/80kph, since the trucks do too. But nobody drives 60kph, and the roads slow down to that every time there’s a tiny tienda on an otherwise empty road, and going back and forth speeds, and pulling off to the side for everyone going faster (which is a standard thing) was exhausting. I only screwed up once and took an exit without slowing down and the speed bump had us airborne and I’m amazed my suspension survived. But we made it. If it weren’t for the dogs I definitely wouldn’t do it again. It was 7 exhausting days. The car was caked in salt. But $8 at a car wash next to the parking lot got me a hand wash and my car hasn’t looked this good since I bought it.
