THE PANTHEON

The Pantheon was a temple dedicated to all the gods, as its name suggests (Pantheon comes from the Greek words "pan" meaning "all" and "theos" meaning "god").

The original Pantheon was built by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus in 27 BC. However, this building was destroyed by fire in 80 AD. The Pantheon we see today is the result of a reconstruction by Emperor Hadrian between 118 and 128 AD.

The Pantheon is famous for its massive dome, which was the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world for over 1,300 years. The dome is 43.3 meters (142 feet) in diameter and 43.3 meters (142 feet) high, and it is supported by eight massive arches. The oculus, a circular opening at the top of the dome, is 9 meters (30 feet) in diameter and provides the only source of light for the interior of the building.

The Pantheon was also home to a number of important Roman works of art, including statues of the gods and goddesses, as well as paintings and mosaics. It was a popular place for Romans to come to worship and to admire the beauty of the building.

The Pantheon continued to be used as a temple until the 7th century AD, when it was converted into a Christian church.
