I knew rugby existed and very approximately what it was, but never saw it til today, last minutes of the world cup, shown on screen of a temporary SF ~park (former transbay station, fwiw). As a context free alien dilettante/fake anthropologist (basically how I relate to humanity, but try for bits of context) I'd theorize both NA football and football/soccer evolved from rugby, taking expensive arms race and effete (or, of-feet) forks. Now I'll have to skim the actual historical relation of each.
