I hated tossing decades of NatGeo magazines into the recycling bin when we cleaned out my momโ€™s house after she passed. But I had no alternative as none of us wanted them.

The magazine was printed with โ€œgravureโ€ printing process that was very expensive to prep for every issue. Multiple heavy steel cylinders had to be engraved with all the color separations and page layouts, then chrome-plated. If a typo was found in the proofing process, the entire cylinder for the black color separation had to be stripped and re-engraved and re-plated. If a photo was bad, four cylinders had to be redone.

But gravure process allows a lot more ink to be put down on that slick slightly-stinky paper they used, resulting in photo reproduction that was far better than any other printing process. NG cared more about the photo reproduction than anything else, cost be damned.

I'd hoped to someday visit the printing plant where NG was produced, but I guess that's not going to happen now.
