There is no outcome where companies don't build fediverse apps (aside from "obscure nerd thing nobody cares about", and we're past that). We can't whack-a-mole corpos out of existence.

Like it or not (I do not), companies have some level of trust in the eyes of the general public. Some will never come here without them.

The opportunity is to let Facebook bring people here and then pull them out of the silo. The risk is that Facebook pulls people from here into the silo, then walls off again.
