Early in the first Trump administration, American comrades popularized the three-way fight as a short-hand for understanding certain evolutions of struggle. On one side, the liberal democratic State, defended by Democrats and the old guard of the Republican Party; on another, fascists and other forces of the far right. And our side, the liberatory social revolution.
Still relevant, this framework asks anarchists and others to build projectualities that confront both the state and capital as we know them as well as the insurgent white nationalism that is gaining hold of some levers of state power, recognizing that it remains in conflict with established elites.
The three-way fight approach allows us to avoid certain errors. Like coming to the defense of or abandoning struggles against the neoliberal institutions attacked or undermined by the far right, such as the mass media or NATO. Or endorsing the campism of some leftists, which views global conflicts through the binary lens of two "camps", supporting theocratic formations and ruthless dictators like Assad in the name of "anti-imperialism".
The years ahead are uncertain, but we should not hesitate to make informed projections. What initiatives can block and disorganize the far right while simultaneously undermining the rationale for the state? Where can creating anarchy set other factions against one another, immobilize them, or offer lifeways more desirable than anything the genocidal pacts of neoliberalism and fascism can afford?
