I know I'm repeating myself, but… what have we done?!
We didn't want Microsoft's monopoly. We were bothered that Internet Explorer didn't follow #standards. We didn't want to adjust our websites to their wannabes…
So we have a #Google monopoly now, and it's much worse. And the worst thing is, Google actually follows standards — and changes them as they see fit.
The best we could hope for is a duopoly — on one hand, the Google #browser, and the lot of browsers based on their engine or related engines. On the other, #Mozilla. So we're stuck between a corporation that cares only about spying on their users, burning the world and destroying free software; and a corporation that tries to fight Google's domination… by doing exactly the same things.
And what does it matter that we have "open" standards, if the bar's so high that no independent project can even get close? And the rich corporations will keep elevating it higher and higher, because the #Internet is not shitty enough already, because we need more shiny things, we need more browsers that match operating systems in complexity.
And minor browsers? The best they can offer to their users is something like: "To use the Mastodon web application, please enable JavaScript." Will they ever receive enough funding and backing to actually become usable? And if they do, won't they become shit like Mozilla did?
