I'd be curious how many of those "someone please explain the joke to me" posts could be addressed by just some decent #AltText.
Alt text isn't intended to fully explain the humor in an image, but just the nature of describing the important details, calling out the meme template, or naming the characters present provides a lot more context for users who don't fully understand to be able to do a simple Google search.
If we, as a society, were better at providing, understanding, and using alt text, it would help entire categories of users understand the points we're trying to make, even beyond those with screen readers or visual impairments.
