‘I eat or I pay my bills’: Americans describe rent burden fears, concerns
==========
Half of Americans are burdened by the cost of housing, according to a recent Harvard study. Marianne Smith, a 65-year-old Oklahoma resident, pays about 35% of her income toward rent. She relies on Social Security Disability Insurance of $1,844 per month to pay her medical bills and rent. Rental costs have been increasing every year, putting more pressure on her wallet. Rent reached historic highs in 2021 and 2022, with median rents 21% higher than in 2001. Of the 22.4 million rent-burdened renters, roughly half spend more than 50% of their income on rent. The cost burden intensified the most for middle-income renter households earning $30,000 to $74,999 annually. Affordable housing access is not keeping up, with a severe shortage of homes that are affordable to people with the lowest incomes. Homelessness has been on the rise since 2016, with more than 650,000 people experiencing homelessness in January 2023.
