As January approaches, I want to talk about daily practice in Paganism. "Daily" is a misnomer. What's more important, is consistent practice.

In today's world of productivity apps and "streaks," it makes it seem like if you miss 1 day out of 30, it's a failure. Which is bullshit, because doing something 29 times will undoubtedly build your skill. For example, I suck at basketball, but if I tried to make a basket 20 times, I might land one.

Let's say you want to learn tarot. If you manage only 2 tarot readings a week, that's over 100 in a year if you stick with it. Surely, if you do 100 tarot readings you will become better at it?

I confidently say that I pull a tarot card and give offerings every morning, it's part of my routine. But actually, my journal confirms that it was 283 days so far. So does this mean I failed 64 times? No, it means that my gods will get nearly 300 offerings from me this year.

So my advice for "daily" practice is to actually not do it every day. That’s like starting a game on hard mode; you're gonna have to fail a lot to get anywhere. Isn’t it better to start on easy mode and learn the mechanics first?
