🎙️Quote of the Day🎙️

brugeman (npub1xdt…ntxy) gives us his 30,000-ft view of the #Nostr ecosystem:
“We already have people, notes, posts, highlights, stalls, products, music, files. All the other stuff will follow - companies, drugs, recipes, cars, TVs, games, excel tables, you name it... All visible to any new app, all addressable, composable into new experiences.” 🚀
Three new projects were released recently - Wayman, Filestr and Zapworthy, all relying on new data types (kinds). So we now have music, files and highlights data formats (nostr events), all queryable over a common API (nostr protocol). I don't know who needs to hear this, maybe it's just me, but I finally realized it's the true potential of Nostr.

We used to just have "information" on the internet - a presentation-layer (html+css) and custom APIs behind it on every website. Now with Nostr we can access "data" - all data types can have a standardized representation as nostr events and a standardized API to store/query this data from a decentralized swarm of relays.

We already have people, notes, posts, highlights, stalls, products, music, files. All the other stuff will follow - companies, drugs, recipes, cars, TVs, games, excel tables, you name it... All visible to any new app, all addressable, composable into new experiences.

I thought that portable identity was what Nostr added to the internet. Now I realized it's also a data layer.

This is mind blowing! Need to rethink it all over again.

Derek Ross (npub18am…p424) During a brief nests (npub1us9…q4g0) , Vitor Pamplona (npub1gcx…nj5z) announced that the official Google Play version of Amethyst will NOT have NIP-94 and NIP-95 enabled by default. The new features remain optional for users who wish to use it. 🤝
During a brief nests (npub1us9…q4g0) session, Vitor Pamplona (npub1gcx…nj5z) announced that the official Google Play version of Amethyst will NOT have NIP-94 and NIP-95 enabled by default. The majority of users that use Amethyst get their version from Google Play. Those that wish to remain on the bleeding edge of tech and want to do A/B testing can do so and use the version from GitHub. This is fantastic news! Thanks Vitor! Nostr is winning.

I absolutely love the new Amethyst update!

It offers users a wide range of options, from regular image uploads to NIP-94 and NIP-95. The best part is that all of these options are optional, so you can choose whatever works best for you.

Providing users with a variety of choices is one of the best things that clients can do, and Amethyst has done a great job in this regard with this new update.

Well done! Vitor Pamplona (npub1gcx…nj5z)

cloud fodder (npub10np…tl5h) Prior to Vitor’s announcement, a fork of the Amethyst client was released to remove follow blocking and “hot wire” images so they post both NIP94 and a URL at the same time. With the images no longer being an issue, @cloudfodder advises there is less need to fork, however it is still available for those who wish note to have auto-blocking. 🍴
Well, if anyone was still wanting to remove the auto-blocking in Amethyst, here's a fork release with just that (now that images are fixed upstream, there is less of a need to fork imho).

Spiral (npub1spr…8s72) has issued to date, 70+ grants worth $7M+ to 40 grantees and 10 projects across 20+ countries. A dozen now work full-time bitcoin jobs. Read all about the importance of FOSS, the 🌀 grant process, and how to support their work. jack (npub1sg6…f63m) says he’s so proud of the team, he reshared a video of Spiral Grantee Testimonials. https://youtu.be/7VFWx9mkm8U 🧡
To date, we’ve issued 70+ grants worth $7M+ to 40 grantees and 10 projects across 20+ countries. A dozen now work full-time bitcoin jobs. Rather than fire off statistics, we gave current and former grantees a chance to talk FOSS bitcoin in their own words: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VFWx9mkm8U&t=3s

In case you don’t have 4 minutes (come on, you’re on Twitter), the takeaway is this: Every org that benefits from the work of FOSS devs and designers should be supporting them. This way, devs, and designers get paid to do what they love, bitcoin gets better, and everyone wins.

OKCoin, HRF, OpenSats, Bitfinex, Strike, Coinbase, Kraken, Chaincode Labs, mitDCI, Brink, the btrustteam, and others are with us. Don’t have the resources to run a grant program? Donate to orgs like Brink or let employees take sabbaticals to work on FOSS.

We are always accepting grant applications. If you have an ambitious idea for how to improve bitcoin, email us at grants@spiral.xyz. It worked for this testimonial video’s stars: thunderbiscuit, Daniela Brozzoni, John Cantrell, Justin Moon, Steve Myers, Stephen DeLorme.

so proud of the spiral 🌀 team i’m reposting this https://youtu.be/7VFWx9mkm8U

$100 from Brian received 💪

Here are my messages to the CEO of coinbase.

Eagle eyed viewers among you will realise that I was trying to rug Brian with the bitcoin basechain address.

He would’ve sent $100 over basechain to the Human Rights Foundation 🙃

In the end, he learned how to use Lightning! ⚡️

TheGuySwann (npub1h8n…rpev) orange pills his contractor, and shares the story and some tips 🍊 💊
A short story:

So I've been trying to get a lot of renovations and work done on the house and trying to finish the basement. I've recently gotten an estimate for putting a fence around the yard for the dogs.

It was a little more than I hoped but I had intended to just move forward, but they wanted a significant deposit immediately to get started. This immediately ran me into the headache of going from Bitcoin to USD in a quick and inexpensive manner.

This was also while ACH transfers that I've done to move the dollars to Fold (no way I'm spending thousands and not getting sats back on it), are suddenly taking 3x as long. A problem that started when SVB blew up.

After realizing that this was going to take a 2% fee on CashApp to sell, an ACH to my bank, then another ACH to my Fold, I decided to give a pitch for them to save me all those steps and just accept Bitcoin directly with the 1% fee using OpenNode.

The guy I was working with was interested and on board with my argument, but the owner refused despite the fact that it would obviously save them money and mean I could pay the deposit in 10 minutes time with no selling fee at all.

At this point I decided I was going to do something, especially with these sorts of jobs that involve large transfers which are a huge pain in dollars. I was just going to take the time to find someone who would accept Bitcoin.

I politely declined to do business with them. My response:

"Thanks man, appreciate the reply. I'm gonna look for other contractors here for a bit because I'd rather not build a relationship with a company that makes me have to revert to using a banking system that I literally could not despise more, or trust any less."

"I may get back in touch with you in a few weeks if there seems no other good option. No hard feelings, I do appreciate you taking this to the owner."

I added some choice words about the banking system for flair. 😆

The worker I was chatting with immediately agreed and then we started a short back and forth about how corrupt the banks were, why Bitcoin (of course he said crypto, lol) was the future, and HE brought up how the Fed was going to push a CBDC.

"Same. The more we use Bitcoin, the more irrelevant their attempt to centralize it is.

If the day comes that they push a CBDC on us, I'll officially be refusing to do business with anyone who doesn't accept Bitcoin, because I'm not touching that crap."

He responded with "Agreed!"

... that's where we left it.

------------------------------------------------------------------

I just got a text message tonight from the guy. He said the owner is willing to work with #Bitcoin if I hadn't found someone else yet.

I think it's time that I will start pitching the case for Bitcoin, in short and sweet bullet points, with every company I work with — & where it feels like it makes sense, I'm going to refuse to do business with anyone who doesn't accept Bitcoin.

We have weight in the market. We need to be the intransigent minority. Bitcoin won't save the economy if no one knows how to use it, or is too afraid and too panicked to try something new when the shit hits the fan. The time to push for integration is now.

Carman 🏴‍☠ (npub1u8l…turz) Announces ephemeral #bitcoin transaction broadcasting over Nostr. In a separate note, calle 👁️⚡👁️ (npub12rv…85vg) explains more. 🔏
Nostr is going to be great for bitcoin privacy. Here's something small I hacked together in an hour that lets you use nostr as an alternate bitcoin transaction broadcast mechanism!

https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/476

How about using Nostr to relay Bitcoin transactions of other users!

I feel like we had a conversation at #[0]'s pod about this just last week and now there is a proposal for a Bicoin transaction relay over nostr by #[1] 🤙

The speed at which things are happening!

Why is this important?

Bitcoin nodes send transactions to their peers which then are propagated further to the rest of the network. Surveillance companies connect to *many* nodes so they can estimate the origin of a transaction, which can potentially be used to link your Bitcoin wallets to your real-life identity (through your IP address). If you're paranoid, you can use mempool dot space already today to publish your transactions as an alternative to the P2P network.

But having a network of different users all broadcasting each other's tx, like with this proposal, is a lot more powerful IMO. Whether this or something like this ever makes it into Bitcoin Core remains to be seen. Usually it takes a ton of work. But what's for sure is that alternatives to the normal P2P relay are urgently needed. Proposals like Dandelion are cool but apparently prone to DoS attacks.

Wonder whether we'll ever see a synergy between Bitcoin Core and Nostr. This is an excellent first step in that direction.
