After a boss you should be able to heal I guess, maybe something along the lines of the more damage needs to be healed the longer it takes(which would make player choose more passive paths after a boss) or could sleep it off in an Inn or something, it would either create it so players would need to manage their HP (which could mean less fun if you're looking for combat) or the certainty you are full HP after a boss (which would make the rpg more combat based). depends your preference ofc.
Then, would it be considered fun if player would not be full HP before a boss fight? Could make it rng like rolling dice or a spinning wheel if that works for your style off RPG.
Ofcourse, rewards are fun!
I think if you want players to be the hero and enjoy a storyline let them be able to heal, at the cost of mana of action point of something, if you want there to be more of a challenge you could make healing more difficult?

Just thinking out loud here, I like the topic!
What's the theme like in your rpg? I mean like futuristic, space stuff or medieval or something?
