We're discussing on #debian-devel that by default dpkg syncs to disk at various points to protect against filesystem corruption if there's a crash or power failure during installs, but this makes installs significantly slower.
My laptops have batteries, and my desktop is protected by whole-house battery storage, so I took the plunge and turned off the paranoid syncing.
Updates (which I run frequently because I run Debian Testing) are _much_ faster now. It's a joy.
