Time for my monthly injection at the local nurse's office. I encountered a new type of interaction today, I'm pretty excited!
I go in masked and I see that the nurse's replacement for the previous nurse's replacement is gone, and there is a new replacement (unmasked of course). She seemed to be 70+ years old and I think she used to work at this office years ago, so I think she might have been called back from retirement due to staff shortage. But that's an assumption on my part.
I'm called in, we exchange hellos and the nurse starts filling the syringe, when she suddenly states that she needs to use the bathroom and rushes off. She's back within three minutes. Kind of random.
When she walks back in she immediately asks: "Do you have cold?"
Me: "No."
Nurse: *points at mask* "No?"
Me: "No, I'm trying to prevent it."
Nurse: "Oh, trying not to get sick yourself?"
Me: "Yes."
Nurse: "That's smart."
Me: "Yes, I think so too."
She continues filling the syringe that she abandoned for the toilet.
Nurse: "I heard that in some places infections of it are starting to rise again."
Me: "Yes, that's correct."
Nurse: "So, it's smart that you're masking up."
Me: "Yep."
After this I got my injection and only the heatwave was discussed.
I read about these mystical kind of interactions with unmasked people praising masks from others on Masto, but this was my first time! I feel like I just crossed off a square on some sort of covid conversations bingo.
I really wanted to ask her why she wasn't wearing a mask herself if she thinks it's smart, but didn't want to risk turning the only non-hostile medical situation I've had in a long time unpleasant.
