The Master replied: "This is astute observation, but the Court eunuch is only half correct, for he sees the shadow and not the object casting it. A petty man (小人) has a petty mind, and can only think one thought at a time. Like Shang, the town drunk, he can only understand our hatred, and not the Compassion (仁) for our loved ones which it stems out of, and drives those who would become a *junzi*."
