... Grandpa never had horses on the farm, nor do I recall any others in the surrounding (mostly) German farm area in Southwest Texas. Everybody had tractors.
When the Hill Country, west of San Antonio, was first settled around 1850, German farmers HAD horses. Regularly, though, INDIANS would raid the farms, stealing their horses.
So, farmers began using OXEN on their farms (pulling plows and such). The Indians wouldn't steal them because they MOVE TOO SLOW.
