Several students had begun to dress in the style of a foreign kingdom, having learnt much of its land and its stories from books acquired by traveling merchants. One day the Master saw them and ordered them to redress immediately.
The Master spoke, saying: “A scholar learns of the whole world and appreciates it. Every song, every poem, every philosophy is his delight to add to his knowledge, but a man’s homeland is his homeland. Consummate conduct (理) is to revere the culture of one’s ancestors, though the land, the duke, and his court be fools for a season.”
