Here's a tangentially relevant anecdote: a few days ago, I recycled ~15 Turkish Lira that were sitting on my desk for a year. A 5 Lira note and the rest were coins which I threw in the metal recycling bin.
That Turkish Lira was some change I had on me from travelling there less than a decade ago, when a waterbottle in the middle of Sultanahmet was 0.5TL
