I'd also say analysis is a good tool for verifying (or not) that our "irrational", pattern-seeking, and "flawed" brains are seeing the truth. Our brains and eyes aren't reliable interpreters of events (see books like Thinking Fast and Slow, Predictably Irrational, and Gladwell's Blink for good discussion). Agreed that reality is best interpreted through a balance of both "eye-test" and data, but I'm reluctanct to cede good data to human eyes.
