The Master replied: “Let an errant man see you thrive in virtue, and he will be drawn to your success like moths to a candle. Master Kong said a mistake is only real if uncorrected [Analects 15]. If he will not change, confront him with a handful of close friends. Shame (耻) is righteousness burning to come out of a petty man’s (小人) heart. Stoke it, and you will purify him. If even that will not work, ostracize and let him learn his lesson the way a dog would- through suffering the consequences of his actions.”
