🇺🇸 In the first U.S. presidential #election in 1788-89, George Washington was the only candidate and essentially ran unopposed. The story goes that when the election results came in, Washington was so popular that he received all 69 electoral votes. However, it was reported that some electors tried to make things interesting by writing in silly names like “King George” and “Benny Franklin” as jokes, only to realize that their votes would still go to Washington. In the end, Washington received the last laugh, becoming the first president while his would-be competitors ended up as punchlines!
