Most magazines are printed on web presses, which do a quite decent job. But anything higher end goes on a 4, 6 or 8 color offset press.

The graphic design school I went to in late 90s in So. SanFran was run by the Printers Union. First thing they did is show us a 4C offset press, and then taught backwards to make QuarkXpress do the file right so it prints correctly.
