A good question: “When it comes to accomplishments, why mention someone’s gender or race?”
This used to annoy me too. But as a father to a half-Asian daughter, here’s the reality: people need role models.
When my daughter sees people like her doing something, that makes her feel like it’s okay to do it. For example, when she’s sees an older Asian woman coding something, she then feels it’s okay to do it—thus making her feel that coding is something she can do too.
I don’t like putting people on the spot. However, role models really do matter.
