In the Mac OS X and later era, the use of the control key got mixed in for reasons beyond my comprehension. Probably just the typical "new programmers don't know why things were done that way in the past and therefore 'IDGAF' and change it for no reason" phenomenon.
So now you have this horrible and confusing situation with FOUR modifiers, and it's not even that control is used as the least important/least common modifier.
