The guitar virtuoso’s second studio album was recorded on a minimal budget of $13,000.
Satriani's equipment was limited by the budget, consisting of two Kramer Pacer guitars and an adapted Stratocaster guitar, for which he would change the pickups to get different sounds.
His effects included a Roland JC-120, a Marshall '68 half-stack, and a Rockman.
To save money, the album made heavy use of drum machines, and in fact, "Satch Boogie" is the only song to fully feature live drums, played by Jeff Campitelli.
In a Songfacts interview, Satriani said for the title track, he started thinking about what would happen if aliens came to Earth, but instead of looking to destroy the planet or take over, they were just looking for fun…
"I had never seen a science fiction movie about that, so I thought, 'What would that sound like?"
As far as the spectacular and iconic cover goes, Satriani was unfamiliar with the Marvel comic character Silver Surfer and had named the album and title track without the character in mind.
However, Jim Kozlowski, the production manager for Relativity Records, was a comic book fan and had used the nickname "The Silver Surfer" as a radio DJ name.
He suggested using the character for the album cover.
Kozlowski presented the album to Marvel and obtained permission to use the character. Subsequently, Marvel Comics has paid homage to Satriani in Silver Surfer comics ("the planet Satriani")
The album went to #10 in Australia, #16 in New Zealand, #29 in the US, and #53 in Canada.
