binkle (npub1kdy…2hnf) I've seen it done two ways: billboard faces towards the vector of the objects position to the cameras position, or the normal is such that the geometry is always facing the camera directly in view space. Both have their own artifacts but I think the former looks "more right" because it doesn't end up visibly rotating objects as you rotate the camera around. I think the latter is more shader friendly but don't quote me on that.
