Many (most?) cog neuro people studying memory have been convinced for a while that episodic memory is associated with recovery of a previous state of temporal context. But no one has really specified *how* that could happen. Regular old Hopfield networks certainly won't work.
This paper is a serious attempt to figure out a neural network model for recovery of temporal context:
