It's a real shame that a lot of skills and knowledge of hand-making such things has been stripped away, automated. The conditions were appalling for a lot of the workforce, by the sound of it, and a lot of them suffered very poor health as a result, but what they made together was simply beautiful. If only such an industry could thrive in more enlightened times - better conditions, gender equality in roles, more environmentally friendly - it would be a great thing...
