Parked near the Hot Gates, the site of the Battle of Thermopylae where 300 Spartans lead by King Leonidas fought Xerxes’ Persian Army.
Although they were ultimately defeated, the battle stands as testament to the fighting prowess of the Spartans and the tactical acumen that allowed a massively outnumbered force to withstand onslaught for so long by using the terrain to their advantage.
The Persians were finally defeated in two further battles - a sea battle in the Straits of Salamis, the island we were on two days ago, and then in the Battle of Plataea where the full might of the Spartan army joined a unified Greek force to defeat the General Maradonius and so end the Greco-Persian wars in 479BC.
