Direct democracy is a terrible idea in practice as it's based entirely on majority rule. There's no safeguard for essential rights or protections enumerated in a constitution. That leaves a situation known as tyranny of the majority, where anything is going is acceptable as long as most people vote for it. If the majority wants to restrict which states blacks can live it, they can do it with a vote. If the majority wants anyone accused of selling drugs summarily executed without trial or due process, they just need prevail in a vote. There are no constitutional restrictions or limitations on government, which may not matter to the majority, but the targets of their desires certainly care.
