I first viewed DSC seasons 1 and 2 after all the episodes were released. I was happy that DSC presented a normal, loving, gay married couple. Then Hugh is murdered in season one's "Despite Yourself." WTH. I was furious. I thought instead of representation with dignity and normalcy, Hugh and Stamets' relationship was being treated as a disposable plot point.
That episode was first shown January, 2018. Showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts immediately said, "We will see Dr. Culber again. He is not 100% dead," in that episode's After Trek. Still, Hugh doesn't truly return for over a year, not until DSC season two's "Saints of Imperfection" is first shown in February, 2019.
I only waited the time it took me to binge watch DSC to see Hugh's return. I have no idea how first time viewers who had to wait a year to see Hugh's return did not just implode from frustration.
