assuming 'bandwidth requirements' (throughput/latency/loss/jitter/volume) are the considered reason for not already switching to their in house VoIP (Facetime Audio) platform, the side-band push authentication would have the benefit of requiring extremely minimal data. Apple could even play a DTMF sequence to the handset matching a code sent in the push, before the handset alerts the owner, to close any window to 'perfectly time' a scam call to coincide with an authentication push.
