In his speech, António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, lamented that countries are acting independently, disregarding the UN Charter. However, it's evident from recent global events that this disregard is widespread:

- Russia invaded and illegally annexed parts of Ukraine, undermining the very foundation of the UN Charter;

- Iran supports, arms, and trains terrorist groups throughout the Middle East and supplies weapons to Russia for its war against Ukraine;

- Hezbollah continuously violates UN Resolution 1701 by positioning weapons near the Israeli border and launching attacks on Israeli cities and civilians;

- Hamas has not only built tunnels under UN facilities but also involved UN employees in the October 7th terrorist attack that killed over 1,200 Israelis.

These actions reveal a deep crisis in international governance and, more pointedly, reflect a perception that Guterres' leadership at the UN has been weak and ineffective. His administration is increasingly seen as passive, leading to a diminished reputation for the UN, which once commanded respect and influence in global affairs.

His failure to enforce UN mandates and uphold the charter has, in the eyes of many, allowed this growing lawlessness, as countries act without consequence. As Guterres himself lamented, nations are "doing what they want." But that, many would argue, is due to his own lack of decisive leadership.
