Bullet points of Houthis warn shipowners in new phase of Red Sea campaign: Prepare to be attacked
- The Houthi rebels in Yemen have been sending threatening emails to Greek shipping companies, warning them of attacks on their vessels for violating a transit ban imposed by the Houthis.
- The emails, which have been sent since May, have increased alarm among shipping companies and have led some to stop sailing through the Red Sea.
- The Houthis have carried out nearly 100 attacks on ships crossing the Red Sea since November, sinking two vessels, seizing another, and killing at least four seafarers.
- The emails have been sent by the Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center (HOCC), a body set up by the Houthis to liaise with commercial shipping operators.
- The HOCC has warned that any vessels that continue to violate the ban will be 'directly targeted by the Yemeni Armed Forces in any area they deem appropriate'.
- The Houthi rebels have also been firing missiles, sending armed drones, and launching boats laden with explosives at commercial ships with ties to Israeli, U.S. and UK entities.
- The European Union's naval force Aspides has confirmed the evolution of Houthis' tactics, saying that the decision to extend warnings to entire fleets marks the beginning of the 'fourth phase' of their military campaign in the Red Sea.
