I am thinking of joining a particular Mastodon instance which has a specialist focus I'm interested in.

However, when reading their front page I find lots of rules and regs (mostly sensible) and a whole host of moderated servers for all kinds of reasons (from being on a blocklist to seemingly just being something the admin doesn't like). They do also have a "post local only" facility which does not federate posts (a feature Mastodon rejected).

Hmm.
