You probably haven't missed it, there's so much context that often gets left out in these arguments (part of the reason they happen). I haven't used MacOS since the Mountain Lion days, what's it like now?
GNOME to my understanding wants to move away from X11 but the screen reader is one of the major blockers. As for the deadline on X11, it's still a few years away when Red Hat completely drops it from RHEL. Since it's considered a big issue I have no doubt it'll be addressed by then.
