Maybe not my best, but it's the one to hand:
[They emerged] onto a wide street paved with cobblestones and lined with houses and shops. The street smelled of woodsmoke and urine, dung and sweat, all mixed with the sweetness of honey from a nearby chandler’s shop. Dirty water filled the gutter in the center of the street. Smaller lanes, most unpaved, led deeper into the city both to the left and the right. The lanes looked like tunnels themselves, the jettied roofs of the buildings nearly touching each other overhead, blocking the sunlight. Eva shuddered at the thought of walking down such a street on a dark night.
