I guess its role has been mixed - I got the impression that giving a star was to make me save some toots for later or to remember them but by making them visible to all it seems to be showing support like regular "like".
Also yeah, not many people here. For me personally it's okay, I get overwhelmed by large scale social media and enshittified algorithms.
